Media Prima stepping up efforts to stay ahead

SEEKING NEW WAYS: Group recognises need to keep up with changing landcsape and consumer taste

MEDIA Prima Bhd is stepping up efforts to stay ahead of the curve, amid an ever changing media landscape and an increasingly discerning consumer market.

Its top executive said while content offerings remain core to Malaysia's only integrated media group's operations, new revenue streams, new markets and new ways of doing business are continuously sought after.

Media Prima reported a two per cent growth in pre-tax profit for 2012 on a moderate growth in revenue, despite an overall challenging business environment. Gross revenue surpassed the RM2 billion mark for the first time.

Group managing director Datuk Amrin Awaluddin outlined the industry's outlook, saying competition will remain stiff and that Media Prima must continuously seek for better ways of doing business.

"Almost everyone has an ambition of becoming an integrated media company but the market size has remained largely unchanged," he said.

He said while the market size has not changed much, the new frontier now lies in how a media company can make its products available to consumers round the clock, anywhere in the world and in the most economically viable ways.

Real time and mobility are the buzzwords today and the Internet and the advent of telecommunication has required the group to relook its operations.

News and television programmes are now being accessed not only through the print medium and the traditional television but increasingly through handheld electronic devices.

Media Prima is one of Malaysia's top 100 largest listed companies by revenue. It has equity interests in television networks TV3, 8TV, ntv7 and tv9.

It owns more than 98 per cent equity stake in The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Bhd (NSTP), Malaysia's largest publisher with three national newspapers, New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro.

It also has a strong online presence through Alt Media via the lifestyle portal gua.com.my and tonton.com.my.

Its Emas channel showcases Media Prima's production of popular television programmes via Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) on Telekom Malaysia Unifi's HyppTV.

Media Prima has three radio stations (FlyFM, HotFM and One FM) while in outdoor advertising, it is represented by Big Tree Outdoor Sdn Bhd, UPD Sdn Bhd, The Right Channel Sdn Bhd, Kurnia Outdoor Sdn Bhd and Jupiter Outdoor Network Sdn Bhd.

Its content creation subsidiary, Primeworks Studios Sdn Bhd, meanwhile, is Malaysia's largest production company.

Media Prima's print division, NSTP, has been investing in providing online contents across its three titles and news through other mediums such as short messaging services and Internet social networks to ensure it stays with its customers round the clock.

In television programmes through the alternative media, Media Prima's Tonton video portal now has about 2.7 million registered users and a monthly pageview of up to 11 million. The portal is accessible from anywhere with Internet connections.

"We cannot be just a media company but must be a consumer outfit offering a wide spectrum of services to an increasingly demanding consumer market," Amrin said.

In television networks, the Nielsen Audience Measurement puts TV3 audience at a commanding 25.6 per cent within other stations and channels as at December 2012 while tv9 commands 7.8 per cent; 8TV 5.9 per cent and ntv7 4.9 per cent.

Offerings by its three radio networks are also segmented according to age and race of listeners. Its outdoor media unit, meanwhile, is moving towards digitalisation.

But wide as it may be, Amrin said the group is not operating without challenges.

As a group, Media Prima generates a hefty 95 per cent of its revenue from advertisements and about the same quantum comes from within Malaysia.

Amrin said this is being closely scrutinised now with the view of diversifying its income stream to lessen the group's exposure to domestic economic vagaries.

Consolidation of its various media platforms has been completed. Its four television stations, for example, today serve the entire range of viewers from the mass market, comprising the various races, to the young semi-urban and rural Malays.

In the print media section, each of its three print publications now serves a different market segment.

Media Prima is also expanding its offerings outside of Malaysia. Primework Studios for example, has been selling contents in both the local and international markets, besides being involved in joint-venture productions with Singapore's MediaCorp and partners in Indonesia.

Primeworks has produced or co-produced 12 feature films and some 164 hours of drama content comprising 14 telemovies and 11 serials.

Ultimately, Media Prima plans that within the next five years, 40 per cent of its revenue must come from non-television and print sources and that within the same time, 20 per cent of its gross revenue must come from overseas.

Election an ad-vantage for Media Prima, say analysts

KUALA LUMPUR: Media Prima Bhd is expected to perform better this year as the upcoming general election is likely to boost its revenue and earnings.

MIDF Research said historically, general elections will boost advertisement expenditure of media companies.

"We expect that Media Prima will perform better in the financial year ending December 2013 given the impact from 13th general election and better gross domestic product growth," it said.

The research house also upgraded the stock to a "buy" call and adjusted earnings forecast upwards by 13.2 per cent.

"We believe that election fear has been an unduly reason for its weak share performance this year. This provides an opportunity for investors to accumulate a stable company. The generous dividend will also be an added incentive," MIDF Research said.

Meanwhile, Public Investment Bank believes that Media Prima's direction to focus on expanding its content horizon and to grow organically will deliver sustainable growth results.

This can translate to an estimated six per cent growth in revenue and profit after tax and minority interest (PATAMI) for the financial year 2013, it said.

Public Investment Bank noted that the group remains in net cash position of RM600 million and had successfully improved its financial position to a positive accumulated gain of RM9.7 million from previous acquisition and restructuring plans.

"Media Prima's management continues to drive its business through investment in content and to grow its respective segments, thereby, backing our notion to justify a neutral view," it said.

Meanwhile, OSK Research bumped up Media Prima's earnings forecast for the financial year 2013 and 2014 by 14 per cent and 26.2 per cent, respectively.

"Despite a challenging operating environment, Media Prima has managed to capture the Malay language media market, which we believe still has room to grow," it said.

http://www.orientaldaily.com.my/ ... 783:&Itemid=198

Media Prima allocates RM135m in capex

Media Prima Bhd, Malaysia's leading integrated media investment group, has allocated RM135 million for capital expenditure (capex) this year.

Group chief financial officer, Mohammad Ariff Ibrahim, said the capex was slightly higher than the average yearly allocation of between RM90 million and RM100 million because it included additional expenditure.

"This year we allocated an extra of between RM35 million and RM40 million because we are moving our corporate office to Bangsar.

"It is also for the refurbishment costs of Sri Pentas," he told a media briefing after the company's annual general meeting (AGM) today.

Media Prima's pre-tax profit for the financial year ended December 31, 2012 rose to RM282.9 million from RM277.74 million in 2011.

Revenue increased by four per cent to RM2.04 billion, the highest since the group was incorporated.

Meanwhile, he said, the advertising industry was expected to see between six and eight per cent growth in advertising expenditure (adex) from companies.

"I believe after the general election, the companies' adex will come back," Ariff said.

He said Media Prima's growth in the second half was expected to be strong as demand for advertising picked up.

Almost 85 per cent of the company's earnings were derived from advertising income, he said.

On outlook, chairman Datuk Johan Jaafar said 2013 will be another challenging year for the company due to the uncertain local and global economic environment.

He said Media Prima will use a similar strategy as in 2012 in order to maintain its favourable financial year results as well as industry leadership position.

"We continue to invest in quality and relevant contents. We feel that a focus on contents, allied to prudent cost management and enhanced operational efficiencies, will put us in good stead for the year ahead," he said.

Besides that, the company will also continue to identify new target markets and focus on attracting new advertisers, he said.

Meanwhile, Media Prima shareholders had approved a final single-tier dividend of seven sen (2011: five sen) per ordinary share for financial year ended December 31, 2012 at the AGM.

The dividend will be paid on June 28, 2013.-- Bernama

http://www.orientaldaily.com.my/ ... 053:&Itemid=198

MEDIA Prima Digital, Malaysia's largest integrated new media group, achieved more than 49 million page views and 10 million unique visitors during the recent 13th General Election.

The hits were accumulated from the day of the dissolution of Parliament to polling day through its various online platforms; MyUndi (www.myundi.com.my), New Straits Times (www.nst.com.my), Berita Harian (www.bharian.com.my) and Harian Metro (www.hmetro.com.my).

MyUndi is a product of Media Prima Digital, in collaboration with Media Prima Television Networks and New Straits Times Press (M).

The portal (www.myundi.com.my) provided news updates from TV3, ntv7, 8TV and TV9 as well as Harian Metro, Berita Harian and the New Straits Times.

The portal is accessible in three languages - Bahasa Malaysia, English and Chinese - and also features analytical discussions by experts, information on candidates and results from the previous 12th General Election for reference.

The "Live Streaming" application on the site took viewers to several election "hotspots" in addition to streaming numerous live programmes and providing converged news feed from New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro.

More than 7.9 million page views were recorded on MyUndi from May 5 to May 6.

At its peak, MyUndi had more than 750,000 page views per hour. With a total of 6,912 stories from seven different newsroom (TV3, ntv7, 8TV, TV9, New Straits Times, Berita Harian & Harian Metro), Media Prima Bhd is the only integrated media company to combine its print media, TV stations and digital media in a seamless manner.

The group recorded 1.9 million unique visitors with 2.9 million visits on polling day itself.

Overall, a total of 49 million page views were recorded from the online platforms (MyUndi, New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro) between April 3 and May 6.

Top-notch coverage by the group's editorial team also garnered 205,000 video views throughout the campaign period.

"We are constantly pushing the boundaries of innovations in the digital realm by merging online expertise with our strong brands in the traditional platforms.

"The convergence effort of both traditional and online platforms had brought abundant opportunities for the group to engage with both current and potential users and, thus, enabled a vast online content to be accessible anytime," said Media Prima Digital group general manager Lam Swee Kim.

Media Prima awaiting its prime time
Business & Markets 2013
Written by Alliance Research
Friday, 12 July 2013 09:56

MEDIA PRIMA BHD []
(July 11, RM2.65)
Maintain neutral at RM2.61 with a revised target price of RM2.65 (from RM2.52): Media Prima said it secured and boosted revenue from non-traditional advertisers (small and medium enterprises and government agencies such as the Education Ministry and Tourism Board), although part of the growth in the first five months of the 2013 financial year ending December (FY13) was due to election-related advertising expenditure (adex).

As these clients are relatively new, the margins are low but Media Prima expects them to improve gradually as the effectiveness of its media platforms are proven to them.

We maintain our 3% growth forecast for FY13 for its free-to-air TV segment, despite the strong performance in the first five months of the year. This is in view of the high base effect in the second half (2H) of FY12. Media Prima is also uncertain whether fourth quarter (4Q) adex could turn out stronger given the observation of a normalisation in spending pattern by traditional
advertisers.

We are also maintaining our growth forecast of 3% for FY13 for its newspaper segment, which is decent and should be still ahead of the industry average for newspaper.

Media Prima has significantly reduced its newsprint inventory level to three months (six to eight months previously) as it cut down on unnecessary costs incurred for warehousing. We understand current spot newsprint prices remain low at about US$600 (RM1,896) per tonne, but this was dampened by the depreciation in the ringgit/greenback exchange rate.

As Media Prima imports 40% of its newsprint, any anti-dumping duties imposed on European producers will lead to higher costs. Based on our sensitivity analysis, for every US$10 per tonne increase in newsprint costs, earnings will reduce by 0.5%.

Given a relatively stronger balance sheet and healthy cash flow generation, we believe Media Prima will likely revise its 25% to 75%
dividend policy to a higher and narrower band, providing a clearer dividend commitment to investors.

As such, we are raising our FY13 to FY15 dividend payout assumption to 70% (from 60%), in line with its actual dividend payout of 67% in FY12.

We trim our FY13 to FY15 forecasts by 1.6% to 2.7% after adjusting for: (i) higher capital expenditure in FY13; and (ii) a weaker ringgit/US dollar exchange rate in FY13 (from RM3 to RM3.10 per US dollar).

We roll over our valuation base year for Media Prima to FY14, which is still based on a target price-earnings ratio (PER) of 12 times, in line with its historical average and our target PER for the sector. Together with the slight adjustment in our earnings, our target price for Media Prima is now raised to RM2.65 (from RM2.52).

We maintain our "neutral" call on Media Prima on our expectation of a softer adex growth outlook for 2HFY13 and FY14 due to potential subsidy rationalisation measures by the government. Nevertheless, downside risks are capped by its decent net dividend yield of 5.5%. — Alliance Research, July 11
