Media Prima diversifying revenue sources

LESS DEPENDENCE ON ADVERTISING: Media Prima to move into other areas such as content and pay channels

MEDIA Prima Bhd, the country's biggest media group, is looking at ways to grow other revenue sources in a bid to keep from being too dependent on advertising revenue.

Currently, the bulk - or some 95 per cent - of the group's revenue is derived from advertisements, which leaves it vulnerable to advertising expenditure (adex) by companies.

Adex in Malaysia over the first quarter of this year has been "very slow" compared to previous years as advertisers are still cautious about spending amid external uncertainties, group managing director Datuk Amrin Awaluddin said.

"This year, we want to go more into other areas such as content and pay channels," he told reporters after the group's annual general meeting here yesterday.

Media Prima already has one pay channel through Telekom Malaysia's HyppTV, which runs five of the group's channels.

Content is important for the group, Amrin pointed out, adding that this year, it will focus its investments on content across all its media platforms - which include television, radio, print and online - to ensure that it is at least among the top two players in the country for each platform.

The group also plans to increase its overseas revenue by distributing and selling its content in the region. Currently, up to 99 per cent of its revenue is derived from within Malaysia.

Media Prima also wants to improve its distribution and reach across the country.

On adex, Amrin said it was still too early to say how adex will pan out for the rest of the year after the slow start, but noted that three upcoming events - the Euro 2012 football championship, the London Olympics and a potential general elections at home - are likely to contribute positively to adex.

"We're hoping these three events will be able to drive our revenue," he remarked.

Last year, the group delivered a record net revenue of RM1.6 billion, which chairman Datuk Johan Jaaffar said reflected its ability to provide total solutions that included prudent and cost-effective financial management.

The group has no plans to start a Chinese newspaper despite having an existing licence for it, Amrin said. The licence was obtained many years ago when it ran Shin Min Daily, which ceased operations 15 years ago.

Media Prima, which has been on a buying spree over the last few years, will consider acquiring more companies only if the valuation and pricing of the target is reasonable and if it would be earnings-accretive to the group.

"We don't want any more turnaround stories. Also, we have no plans to go into non-media related businesses," he added.

Any expansion into the region is likely to be via joint ventures rather than taking up equity stakes, he said.

Media Prima's platforms, which also include new media, command strong positions in the market today, ranking either top or in second position in terms of market share.

One of its new media initiatives, Tonton - the region's largest online video portal which can also be viewed over smart phones - has made significant headway with over two million registered users since its launch last April.

Media Prima expects revenues to stay solid

KUALA LUMPUR: Media Prima Bhd expects advertising revenue to remain encouraging for the remaining part of the year, helped by the introduction of several television programmes.

The company, which has seen significant improvement in advertising revenue during the 2012 Olympics period, expects the trend to continue as Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Merdeka approach.

"These are the times when people spends more and advertisers would want to capture the audience's attention during these times," said Ahmad Izham Omar, chief operating officer of TV Networks and chief executive officer of Primeworks Studios.

Post-Olympics and festive season, the company has a few initiatives lined up to keep viewers excited.

"We will be launching a number of new programmes, including a reality show, award shows and others. We have to be innovative.

"Plus, I think advertising revenue will remain strong for the remaining part of the year. Usually, consumers and advertisers tend to spend more in the second half," said Ahmad Izham.

He was speaking after announcing a new activity under the group's Impian Emas Negara initiative, whereby all Malaysians will each get a free scoop of Baskin-Robbins ice cream if the country's sportsmen and sportswomen win Malaysia's first gold medal in the Olympics in Britain.

The offer is available at all 61 Baskin-Robbins outlets nationwide, excluding the two kiosks at Pantai Hospital in Bangsar and Genting Theme Park.

"It's our intention to unite Malaysians in one voice to cheer on our Olympic heroes. If Malaysia does get its very first Olympic gold medal, what better way to celebrate than for all Malaysians to be treated to free ice cream," said Ahmad Izham.

Charmaine Cheah, a strategic consultant at Golden Scoop Sdn Bhd, which is Baskin-Robbins' partner in Malaysia, concurred.

"When Media Prima approached us with the idea, we said 'yes' immediately. Afterall, ice cream is all about happiness," Cheah said.

Cheah said the company had aggressive growth plans for the country.

"We currently have 61 outlets nationwide and by the end of the year, we hope to have 75 outlets. While we are still finalising the locations, the new outlets are likely be in the Klang Valley and Sabah and Sarawak," she said.

The premium ice cream company expects its revenue to register an organic growth of 12 per cent this year.

Media Prima looking ahead to Next Big Thing

MEDIA Prima Bhd yesterday unveiled its joint initiative project to boost the local multi-billion creative industry, called The Next Big Thing.

The project, collaborated with three other parties, Multimedia Development Corp (MDec), Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd and Rhythm & Hues Studio is aimed at recognising and nurturing creative local talent to become globally competitive.

"With our support, this industry can go far and this project offers an opportunity for story tellers and animators to achieve global success," said Media Prima Television Networks chief operating officer Ahmad Izham Omar.

Malaysia's creative industry currently stands at RM16 billion, comprising sectors such as advertising, animation, digital content, TV/film, games, music and video.

MDec head of policy and strategy for creative multimedia division Hasnul Nadzrin Shah said the rationale behind this collaboration is mostly economic.

"Last year, the TV industry generated a revenue of RM4.6 billion and from this, only RM45 million came from the animation space and of that, RM15 million were from exports market," he said.

Hasnul said there are many talented Malaysians who can go far in the creative industry, given sufficient funding and exposure.

He cited his experience in Europe recently where MDec's contact informed him that even the creator of the game "Angry Birds" was impressed with Malaysian children's animated TV series, Upin & Ipin.

Both Izham and Zainul spoke to reporters after signing the collaboration agreement in Sri Pentas here yesterday.

The Next Big Thing project has attracted 30 submissions and from that, the 10 best animation shorts will be shortlisted.

The top 10 will be featured on Media Prima's portal, Tonton.com.my, and a winner will be chosen based on votes from the public.

The winner will receive up to RM150,000 funding from Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd to produce a seven-minute pilot episode based from the three-three minute winning animation short.

The pilot episode will be aired in across the four Media Prima TV stations in their Bananana! slot and also Tonton.

MDec will then provide financial assistance to develop the pilot episode into a full series, which may cost between 75,000 and 125,000 per 2D episode or between RM150,000 and RM200,000 per 3D episode.

"The beauty of this project is that commercialisation of the product is confirmed from the very beginning and in this industry, commercialisation has always been the difficult part," said Cradle chief executive officer Nazrin Hassan.

The winner of this project will also receive guidance and special mentoring from Rhythm & Hues Studio Malaysia, which is a part of Hollywood's Academy Award-winning film production studio specialising in visual effects and computer animation.

          Media Prima’s pre-tax profit for Q3 rises to RM79.4m
          November 22, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 – Media Prima Bhd (MPB)’s pre-tax profit for the third quarter ended Sept 30, 2012 rose to RM79.38 million from RM72.72 million in the same quarter last year.

Its revenue also increased to RM437.21 million from RM417.47 million previously.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia, MPB said the group registered a slight contraction in revenue compared to the preceding quarter.

This was due to the EURO 2012 football tournament which attracted more advertisers in the second quarter, as compared to the Olympics in the third quarter, a result of viewer fragmentation.

Media Prima Chairman Datuk Johan Jaaffar said the results reflect a steady combined growth recorded by all media platforms within the group despite the challenges faced following the gradual slowdown in adex spending trend.

“The integration exercise within the group has not only worked well to our advantage but has also been beneficial to our clients as cross-platform promotions provided maximum exposure in reaching broader target audiences,” he said in a statement today.

On prospects, the group said it is committed to maintaining its industry leadership position and earnings growth through continued investment in quality and relevant content.

The group expects the digital media to continue to grow, complementing the traditional media, namely television, print and radio.

“The board expects the business environment in the media industry to remain highly challenging for the remaining part of the year.

“The group will do its best to deliver its 2012 target leveraging through its various media reach and to continue to attract the non-traditional advertisers,” it said. – Bernama
