MDeC, Media Prima to promote creative industry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) yesterday signed a three-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Media Prima Bhd to promote creative industry-related events and initiatives undertaken through the National ICT Initiative via MSC Malaysia.

As a start, Media Prima’s TV3 will be airing the content produced by MSC Malaysia-status companies, providing the platform for aspiring entrepreneurs and technopreneurs to showcase their products while offering an opportunity for these developers to commercialise their intellectual property.

MDeC chief executive officer Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said that the collaboration would further boost efforts to accelerate growth in the creative industry and encourage people to venture into the industry, a “particularly critical” move as Malaysia moves towards a high-value economy.

MDec directs and oversees the national ICT development initiative.

The MoU has targeted a few projects for commercialisation. One such project is a 3D animation series entitled ‘BoBoiBoy’, produced by MSC Malaysia-status company Animonsta Studios Sdn Bhd. The series gained success after being aired on TV3 and is now being shown on Disney Channel Southeast Asia.

Other projects include a public service announcement series, and a subsequent collaboration with Media Prima on the MDeC-initiated Cerita Rakyat Malaysia (Ceramy).

Izham (second from left) exchanging documents with Badlisham after signing of MoU yesterday, witnessed by Media Prima COO of shared services (TV networks) Datuk Kamal Khalid (left) and MDeC COO Ng Wan Peng.
The first Ceramy production will be the legend of Puteri Santubong, for which Media Prima is already scouting for production houses.

Media Prima’s TV networks chief operating officer Ahmad Izham Omar said the roles and responsibilities of the two parties under the three-year MoU would include Media Prima being the preferred media partner for MDeC and MSC Malaysia-funded content; mentoring project applicants and managers in terms of content readiness for broadcast, content quality and target audience; promoting the creative industry initiatives organised by MDeC; and assessing and marketing the programmes chosen for commercialisation and distribution.

“Media Prima will also cooperate in the development of the industry as well as develop our role in various corporate responsibility programmes,” said Izham.

Badlisham added that the 280 or so companies under MDeC had pulled in revenue of US$200 million (RM596 million), a figure which he hoped would double by 2015 as the growth of the industry in the region was about 24%.

Izham added that the collaboration leveraged off MDeC’s role and integrated content from Media Prima.

“The collaboration between us and MDeC requires us to gauge the commercial value and financial viability of the ideas presented,” he said, adding that it would help production houses and animation studios which create good work and ideas, but do not know how to “bring them to TV stations”.

Media Prima seen posting stronger results

ECM Libra Investment Research expects Media Prima Bhd to report stronger second quarter financial year 2011 results later today, driven by strong industry advertising expenditure (adex) growth.

"Given its leading integrated media play and the positive adex outlook, we remain upbeat on the company's prospects," it said in a research note today.

ECM Libra Research has raised Media Prima's financial year 2011-2013 earnings by 4.7 per cent to 12.8 per cent and reiterated a "buy" call with an upgraded target price of RM3.31 from the previous RM3.07.

It said the economic growth outlook remains the key risk for Media Prima going forward, as adex growth could taper off, given the positive correlation between gross adex growth and real gross domestic product (GDP) growth.

"Nonetheless, we believe that the upcoming adex friendly events such as the Olympics and General Election could mitigate the downside risk of the adex growth momentum going forward," it added. -- Bernama

Media Prima 2Q net up 21%

KUALA LUMPUR: Media Prima Bhd’s net profit for 2QFY11 ended June 30 grew 21.2% to RM44.43 million from RM36.65 million in the corresponding period last year, driven by strong performance in its core media platforms of television networks, print media, outdoor media and radio networks.

Second-quarter (2Q) revenue rose 6.7% to RM421.7 million from RM395 million a year ago, while earnings per share improved to 4.25 sen from 3.75 sen. The company declared an interim single-tier dividend of three sen per share.

“The strong results for the quarter has been driven significantly by our ability to provide total solutions for advertising, prudent and cost-effective financial management and integration initiatives throughout our media platforms,” chairman Datuk Johan Jaafar told a media conference on the company’s 1HFY11 results yesterday.

He added that the increase in revenue was also led by a 13% growth in advertisement expenditure (adex) during 2Q. Nevertheless, Media Prima’s 1HFY11 net profit fell 3.7% to RM79.2 million or 7.58 sen a share despite revenue climbing 8% to RM775.9 million.

Jaafar said any decline in adex would only become apparent later in the year.

“As at June we have had a good take-up as adex was driven by festivities. We may see the effect of a possible slowdown from September onwards,” he said.

Jaafar: We may see the effect of a possible slowdown from September onwards.
The company operates TV3, 8TV, ntv7 and TV9. For its print segment, Media Prima manages The New Straits Times, Harian Metro and Berita Harian. Meanwhile, its radio network comprises HotFM, FlyFM and OneFM.

Its outdoor advertising business involves Big Tree Outdoor Sdn Bhd, UPD Sdn Bhd, Right Channel Sdn Bhd, Kurnia Outdoor Sdn Bhd and Jupiter Outdoor Network Sdn Bhd.

“Moving forward, we will continue to leverage on each platform’s expertise and strength. At the same time, we will also continuously add value to our products’ competitiveness as we strive to maintain Media Prima’s position as the leading integrated media group in the country,” said the company in a statement.

Jaafar said Media Prima has spent 60% of its annual budget of between RM75 million and RM100 million to upgrade and replace a number of assets under its print segment.

He also said the group was constantly on the lookout for opportunity to add value through new acquisitions, though it was not currently in discussions with any party.

CIMB Research has Technical Sell on Media Prima

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Equities Research has a Technical Sell on Media Prima at RM2.43 at which it is trading at a FY12 price-to-earnings of 11.6 times and price-to-book value of 1.8 times.

It said on Monday, Sept 19 Media Prima broke below its long term bullish channel as well as its 200-day SMA last week. This breakdown bodes ill for the stock in the medium to long term.

CIMB Research said the recent dead crossover of its 30-day SMA against its 50-day SMA is also negative for the medium term.

“Technical landscape looks gloomy as its MACD is at its lowest level in three years. Its RSI is not yet oversold, which means that there is still room on the downside from here.

“Investors should be wary that most technical signals are bearish on the stock. It may be wise to lock in profits now as prices could fall back towards RM2.20 next. The strong support is seen around the RM1.90-RM2.00 levels while resistance is at RM2.55,” it said.

Media Prima 3Q net profit dips 25.7% to RM53.37m

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 18): MEDIA PRIMA BHD [] net profit for the third quarter ended Sept 30, 2011 fell 25.74% to RM53.37 million from RM71.87 million a year earlier, due mainly to non-recurring negative goodwill of RM35.77 million in 2010 arising from the acquisition of the equity interest in NSTP.

The company said on Friday that its revenue for the quarter rose marginally to RM417.47 million from RM416.75 million a year ago. Earnings per share fell to 5.08 sen from 7.29 sen, while net assets per share was RM1.285.

The company declared a second interim single-tier dividend of three sen per share for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2011 and a special single-tier dividend of five sen per share.

For the nine months ended Sept 30, Media Prima’s net profit fell 13.9% to RM132.6 million from RM154.09 million, on the back of revenue RM1.19 billion.

Media Prima said excluding the non-recurring negative goodwill in 2010 arising from the acquisition of the equity interest in NSTP, the group’s profit after tax and non-controlling interests from continuing operations grew by 31.6% to RM132.7 million compared to RM100.8 million in the same period last year.

Profit after tax and non-controlling Interests decreased by 14% for the period ended Sept 30, 2011 compared to the same period last year if the non-recurring RM53.3 million negative goodwill was included, it said.

Reviewing its performance, Media Prima said it registered minimal growth in revenue compared to second quarter of 2011 which included non-recurring revenues from Sarawak State Election operations.

The global economic slowdown which impacted market's confidence since August 2011 had resulted in the slowing down of advertisement spending, it said.

The group’s results and revenue activities were significantly driven by its core platforms of television network, print media, outdoor media and radio network.

On its prospects, Media Prima said it was committed to maintaining its industry leadership position and its earnings through continued investment in quality and relevant content and branding for its targeted market.

Concurrently, the group will continue to exercise prudent financial and risk management and is optimising its cost management for better leverage on its operating efficiency, it said.

The group, however, said it was cognisant of the challenges faced by the industry at large and by its respective platforms and said it had strategies for each of its division.

“Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the board remains optimistic that the group is on track to achieve its 2011 target,” it said.

Dividend masks uncertainty for Media Prima

Media Prima Bhd
(Nov 21, RM2.95)
Maintain sell at RM2.60 with target price of RM2.25: Results for 9MFY11 were within expectations but it is evident that 3QFY11 revenue and earnings growth year-on-year (y-o-y) ground to a halt. In addition, we are disturbed to notice that 3QFY11 revenue actually eased 1% quarter-on-quarter when we had expected it to exhibit strong q-o-q growth on Hari Raya Aidilfitri ad spend. Maintain “sell” and RM2.25 target price. Only a special single-tier dividend per share (DPS) of five sen (in addition to three sen second interim) provided some cheer.

Core net profit for 3QFY11 of RM53.3 million (+4% y-o-y, +20% q-o-q) brought 9MFY11 core net profit to RM132.7 million (+20% y-o-y), meeting 72% of our full-year estimate but 70% of consensus estimate. Revenue of RM1.2 billion for 9MFY11  (+5% y-o-y) was at 73% of our 2011 estimate.

Although 3QFY11 core net profit was 4% higher y-o-y, revenue and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) were little changed y-o-y. Due to weakening consumer sentiment, TV advertising revenue eased 3% y-o-y, the first time since 4QFY09. Radio ad revenue contracted 15% y-o-y on stiff competition. Although outdoor and print recorded revenue growth y-o-y, their Ebitda were subdued on higher site rental and newsprint costs.

Although 3QFY11 Ebitda and core net profit was 18% and 20% higher q-o-q respectively, we were disturbed to notice that revenue actually eased 1% q-o-q.

Historically, quarters with Hari Raya Aidilfitri tend to exhibit strong revenue growth q-o-q on festive ad spend. We gather that the earnings growth q-o-q was only due to content cost management at the TV networks.

A second interim single-tier DPS of three sen was declared bringing 9MFY11 recurring single-tier DPS to six sen. In addition, a special single-tier DPS of five sen was declared. Year-to-date, total single tier DPS declared is 11 sen or 87% net dividend per ratio (DPR), above our expectation of 60% net DPR for the full-year.

As industry gross TV adex contracted 6% y-o-y in October 2011, we concede that there is likely to be further downside risk to our earnings estimates. We maintain our earnings estimates for now pending a meeting with management but reiterate our “sell” call and RM2.25 target price on 13.5 times one-year forward PER. — Maybank IB Research, Nov 21

Media Prima optimistic of profitable FY2012

Media Prima Bhd is optimistic of delivering a profitable current financial year driven by upcoming global and domestic events as well as expansion of content, distribution medium and
non-advertisement revenues, says Group Managing Director Datuk Amrin Awaluddin.

He said the group would continue to maintain its industry leadership position as the media powerhouse and invest prudently to maintain sustainable growth in revenue and earnings performance.

"The first quarter this year has been slow compared to other years as advertisers have been very cautious due to the business environment, but it's too early to say.

"In the past during the 2008 crisis when businesses globally faced negative growth, notwithstanding the recession period, adex (advertisement expenditure) did well due to events suce as the Euro (Cup) and Beijing Olympics.

"Hopefully this year, upcoming events such as Euro 2012, the London Olympics and Malaysia's forthcoming general elections will contribute positively to adex," he told reporters after the group's annual general meeting.

The group posted a lower pre-tax profit of RM279.5 million in the financial year ended Dec 31, 2011 against RM295.3 million in 2010. It recorded its highest revenue of RM1.622 billion compared to RM1.547 billion previously.

To see sustainable, Amrin said Media Prima would follow such strategies as investing in content in all platforms, increasing revenue contribution from distribution via more platforms, and regional expansion.

In terms of content, he said the group would focus investments in radio, TV, newspapers or online to ensure all its media are in the number one or two position in the specific target markets "as so far our revenue focus was only on advertisement".

Currently, advertisement contributes 95 per cent to Media Prima's revenue.

"This year, in the move to increase our distribution contribution to growth, we want to expand by going into other areas such as content and pay channels, and hopefully, in the future, into pay tv, online and mobile devices," he added.

Five of Media Prima's channels are now delivered via Internet Protocol Television on HyppTV over Telekom Malaysia's UniFi platform.

Meanwhile, on operations, Media Prima expects to reap further benefits via regional expansion in content distribution, as currently the Malaysian operations contribute between 95 per cent and 99 per cent to its growth.

On mergers and acquisitions, Amrin said the group would continue to be on the lookout for media-related opportunities with reasonable evaluation and pricing as well as earnings, and that complement the group's business. -- Bernama

《Metro Harian》
