MAS confident of continuing to rise despite escalating fuel price
By B.K. SIDHU
bksidhu@thestar.com.my

http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/s ... 11&sec=business

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) recorded an 18% higher international pre-loads this year compared with 2010.

Overall, when combined with the domestic sector, its pre-load factor was up by 10% compared with last year, said senior general manager (sales and marketing) Datuk Bernard Francis.

He was confident the pre-load factor would continue to rise despite escalating fuel prices which are affecting travellers in terms of the fuel surcharges.

“We have to induce air travel. Our shift in strategy to focus on the front end has also helped push up the load figures. We began marketing for our forward loads since the second half of last year and our recently launched campaign Global Deals Dream Getaways' is showing encouraging results,'' Francis said in an interview.

Francis ... We have to induce air travel.

This is the second campaign the airline has launched this year after the Malaysia Airlines Travel Fair in February.

Load factor for the third quarter (July to September 2010) was 79% - its highest seat factor in 15 years, and for the last quarter of 2010 it was 77.4%.

For 2010 it was 76.2% and the airline added 4% new capacity. For the first quarter of 2011, load factor was at 76% and new capacity added during the period was 11% from a year ago.

“We will be carrying an additional 500,000 passengers by the middle of this year compared with the same period last year and by year-end, it will reach an additional passenger traffic of one million with the new capacity added by the airline,'' Francis said.

In view of the better showing, International Air Transport Association (IATA) is expected to cut its previous industry-wide forecast of US$8.6bil in airline profits at its AGM today as fears grow of a relapse in the world economy and that would have an impact on air travel.

The previous forecast was made in March when IATA expected oil prices to be around US$96 per barrel, but oil prices have now reached US$110 per barrel.

IATA expects global airlines to spend a record of nearly US$170bil in fuel cost this year, up US$30bil from last year.

On MAS' front end strategy, Francis said there was a need to move away from overdependence on corporate travel and expand the portfolio to include vacationers (senior citizens and leisure travellers) and high flyers. The front end comprises of the first and business classes.

“The front end contribution to revenue is also beginning to look better. If we do not do anything, probably our revenue for the front end of the cabin will come to nothing. It had been on a decline from 24% achieved in 2008, down to 20% last year.

“The original target for the year is 18% but now we are looking at a 25% revenue contribution. So far, we have hit 23% and 25% is achievable and that would translate to a RM650mil contribution towards our earnings,'' Francis said.

To bump up the front end, the airline had to drop fares of up to 50% to lure passengers to get used to flying the front end.

And while the pre-load numbers may be locked in, the airline for the first quarter ended March 31, 2011, suffered an operating loss of RM267mil.

Its growth in passenger revenues in the quarter was outstripped by the steep rise in fuel prices and the strengthening of the ringgit and this had an impact on the airline's performance.

Francis said when the airline made its profit forecast for the first quarter it had assumed an average oil price of US$95 per barrel of Brent crude but oil price has reached US$110 per barrel.

“We even sold the additional capacity we had put in during the quarter but did not anticipate jet fuel prices to go up so much. If fuel had remained the same we would have been profitable. A lot of our planning for the first and second quarters of this year was anchored on jet fuel being priced at US$95 per barrel. The 42% increase in fuel was shocking and that is why we could not do much with the increase,'' he added. Crude oil prices were up 42% from a year ago and jet fuel raced to average the US$130 to US$140 range.

The challenge ahead is to keep loads and yields up and Bernard said the focus of the company in the first half was to fill seats and in the second half it would be to improve yields.

MAS to start fly as oneworld member in 2012
By Presenna NambiarPublished: 2011/06/06
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current ... /Article/index_html

KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia Airlines will start flying as part of the oneworld network by late next year, the national carrier said after announcing plans which will make it the first Southeast Asian carrier to join the oneworld airline alliance.

MAS managing director and chief executive officer Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin, who was in Singapore for the announcement, said the decision to join oneworld was done after careful analysis of the options available to the airline.

The entire process which will take about 18 months to complete, will see the airline reviewing its current arrangements with other airlines, in an effort to optimise its membership in oneworld.

When asked specifically on its arrangement with KLM-Air France, not a oneworld member, Azmil said he was interested in continuing with their partnership.

"There is no rule that members can’t cooperate with non-oneworld members. Overall our entry into oneworld changes the game and it will necessitate a review (of its operations). This does not mean that we will stop doing anything with KLM. We have had a long standing relationship with them and we understand each other really well, " he said.

Malaysia Airlines to join oneworld alliance

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines is to join oneworld alliance soon and expects to start flying as part of the alliance late next year.

In a statement Monday, June 6, MAS said it was unanimously elected a oneworld member designate by the Chief Executives of the alliance’s member airlines, at a meeting on the sidelines of IATA’s 2011 World Air Transport Summit, which opened in Singapore today.

“A formal alliance membership agreement will be completed soon,” it said.

The national carrier said it plans to to develop bilateral links with a number of oneworld’s established partners, who include some of the biggest and best names in the airline industry.

It already code-shares with oneworld partners Cathay Pacific and Royal Jordanian.

MAS said that it becomes part of oneworld, its customers would gain access to the alliance’s global network.

“It will expand oneworld’s global coverage to almost 950 destinations in 150 countries, served by a combined fleet of more than 2,600 aircraft operating some 10,000 flights a day and carrying 358 million passengers a year,” said MAS.

The airline also said that opportunities for expanding the alliance’s coverage of the country would be explored as Malaysia Airlines prepares to join.

“When it becomes part of oneworld, members of Malaysia Airlines’ Enrich frequent flyer programme will be able to earn and redeem rewards on any of oneworld’s 14 other top-class carriers, with top tier members able to use any of the group’s 550 plus airport lounges, and its network will be covered by oneworld’s range of alliance fares.

“At the same time, frequent flyer cardholders of oneworld’s established airlines will be able to earn and redeem rewards when flying on Malaysia Airlines,” it said.

Qantas is serving as sponsor of Malaysia Airlines’ entry into oneworld.

MAS inches up, MD keeps RM300m to RM600m operating profit target
Written by Joseph Chin of theedgemalaysia.com
Tuesday, 07 June 2011 12:01
http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/b ... -profit-target.html

KUALA LUMPUR: Shares of Malaysian Airlines System Bhd (MAS) inched up at midday on Tuesday, May 7 as its managing director said it had kept the operating profit target of RM300 million to RM600 million for 2011.

At 11.56am, MAS was up one sen to RM1.43. There were 1.19 million shares done at prices ranging from RM1.42 to RM1.45.

Bernama quoted managing director Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin Raja Abdul Aziz as saying MAS would remain resilient despite the challenging environment and will not change its operating profit target of between RM300 and RM600 million for the year.

“Life goes on, we don't intend to stop being an airline. Certainly, we have got to deal with it and make sure the level of growth we put in place (will) commensurate with the cost and revenue profile.

"Sometimes it is almost less that I know to be a problem, then… so what's next - and we can guarantee that something will come up from it," he said at a media briefing on the sidelines of the International Air Transport Association AGM and World Air Transport Summit in Singapore.

He said without doubt, he said prolonged higher oil prices "will affect us just as it will affect any other carrier."

Tengku Azmil was commenting on IATA's announcement on Monday that it slashed the airline industry's profit forecast for this year by 54% to US$4 billion, from US$8.6 billion, forecast in March due to natural disasters in Japan, geopolitical tension in Middle-East and North Africa, as well as skyrocketing fuel prices.

MIDF Research retains sell call on MAS
Written by theedgemalaysia.com
Tuesday, 07 June 2011 08:57
http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/b ... ll-call-on-mas.html

KUALA LUMPUR: MIDF Research has retained its sell call on Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and said that while the national carrier’s membership of the oneworld alliance would help boost its revenue and lessen costs, any favourable results will only be noticed in 2013 onwards.

The research house said it was making no changes to its earnings forecast for now till 2012.

“Due  to  limited  implied  upside potential as well as headwinds  from escalating  fuel prices and  some  impact  from  the  MENA  civil  unrest  and  Japanese  natural  disasters, we are expecting the coming 2Q11 numbers to be impinged.

“Therefore we reaffirm Sell with a target price of RM1.24, derived by pegging  its EPS11 to 13.6x PER, which is the average PER of its peers,” said MIDF Research in a note June 7.

CIMB Research maintains Underperform on MAS

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Equities Research is maintaining an Underperform call on MALAYSIAN AIRLINE SYSTEM BHD [] (MAS) and target price of RM1.52, which remains pegged to 2.0 times price-to-book value.

“We recommend a switch to AirAsia. MAS may be more interesting in 2013 once a substantial number of old planes have been replaced by new ones and the benefits from oneworld begin to materialize,” it said on Tuesday, June 7.

CIMB Research said MAS announced on Monday it will join the oneworld alliance from late 2012, which was a positive surprise. After trying since early 2006 when its previous MD Datuk Seri  Idris Jala first broached the idea, MAS has finally succeeded.

Alliance membership will give it a slew of advantages including cost sharing, access to a wider network and more attractive frequent-flier benefits. However, these will accrue only from 2013 onwards.

“Meanwhile, the near-term stresses of high fuel prices and yield pressures are likely weigh down MAS’s share price.

“MAS may be more interesting in 2013 once a substantial number of old planes have been replaced by new ones and the benefits from oneworld begin to materialize,” it said.

Oneworld a better network fit for MAS

Malaysian Airline System Bhd
(June 7, RM1.44)
Maintain sell at RM1.42 with fair value of RM1.10: MAS announced on June 6 that it had been elected a member designate of oneworld at a meeting on the sidelines of the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) 2011 World Air Transport Summit.

Oneworld brings together 12 of the world’s biggest and best airlines and 20 affiliates, with flight coverage reaching the four corners of the world. The notable airlines in the alliance are American Airways, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Japan Airlines, Mexicana and Qantas. In addition to MAS, Kingfisher and Airberlin (Europe’s fifth biggest airline) are also members designate which will be joining the alliance soon. The grouping currently serves 900 destinations and 150 countries, carrying over 340 million passengers a year and accounting for about two-thirds of the total available seat kilometres globally.

Government restrictions and business economics may be stumbling blocks to some airlines in serving their desired markets. The alliance, via code sharing agreements feeds passengers between members’ networks and ultimately broaden revenue and simultaneously minimising overall unit costs for its members.
This sort of cooperation ensures improved connectivity for passengers in terms of smoother transfers and enables frequent flyers to accumulate more mileage points with any of the alliance’s 12 members and 20 affiliates.

Oneworld is a better network fit for MAS than SkyTeam and Star Alliance as MAS will be the only carrier from Southeast Asia in the alliance. Both Sky team and Star Alliance comprise a number of airlines from Asia, which would limit the room for MAS to take advantage of any route gap given the close geographic proximity covered, within six hours flight radius. Furthermore, SkyTeam already has an airline from Southeast Asia namely Vietnam (with Garuda joining soon) while Star Alliance has Thai Airways and SIA.

Although we note that Cathay Pacific is also in the oneworld alliance, the overlapping of MAS and Cathay Pacific routes would be minimal and more importantly, will not outweigh the benefits of the diverse route offerings that MAS can leverage on in the oneworld alliance. By joining the alliance, MAS would be able to expand the alliance’s global coverage by 50 more destinations and with its new aircraft fleet to be delivered in the immediate to medium term, this would also pave the way for MAS to increase the load factor in its premium front-end cabin.

We are positive on this development, but the impact will not be immediate as it takes 18 months to formally join the alliance as some details need to be thrashed out, such as those relating to code sharing, frequent flyer programmes, and the integration of network systems.

We maintain our “sell” call on MAS with our fair value unchanged at RM1.10, premised on 10 times earned value/earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, which is already at a premium to the sector multiple of four to eight times. The stock’s near-term outlook remains challenging for MAS due to stiff competition from low-cost carriers in the domestic air space and its inability to extract positive passenger yields.

MAS’ low earnings base amid its high unit cost structure renders the airline very sensitive to movements in jet fuel price, which have escalated as much as 51% year-on-year. In view of these twin challenges, we forecast that MAS will post a core net loss of RM94 million for FY11 before returning to a profit of RM198 million and RM502.6 million for FY12 and FY13. — OSK Research, June 7

CIMB Research maintains Underperform on MAS

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Equities Research maintained its Underperform call on MALAYSIAN AIRLINE SYSTEM BHD [] (MAS) and maintained a target price of RM1.52.

It said on Friday, June 17 that MAS had, in a briefing on Thursday, reiterated on the benefits of its oneworld alliance membership.

The network would enable MAS tap into a global network of connectivity, a seamless travel experience, frequent flier benefits and airport lounge access.

“We agree that joining oneworld is the right move and a MAS-Qantas partnership through the alliance could form an effective counterweight to the recently announced SIA-Virgin Australia tie-up.

“But we continue to rate MAS an UNDERPERFORM as the 2Q loss is expected to be much larger than the 1Q loss and the benefits of the alliance will only start flowing through in 2013. We maintain our EPS forecasts and target price of RM1.52, which is based on 2x P/BV,” it said.

MAS: ‘9-digit’ enhancement from Oneworld

Malaysian Airline System Bhd
(June 17, RM1.43)
Upgrade to market perform at RM1.39 with fair value of RM1.58: MAS guided enhancement to the tune of “nine digits” or “hundreds of millions” of ringgit per year (we presume top line enhancement) once it is admitted to the Oneworld alliance in 18 months. MAS will benefit from Oneworld’s global network, better connectivity, a strong brand as well as a common/compatible frequent flyer programme. There will also be cost savings arising from the sharing of facilities and infrastructure.

With MAS now on a stronger footing operationally, it becomes more attractive for the 14 existing members of Oneworld to admit the national carrier as a new member, with its key appeal to them being its strong connectivity in Southeast Asia. The admission to Oneworld is also timely for MAS, which is growing its capacity with the delivery of new aircraft over the next four to five years.

The Oneworld membership does not oblige MAS to break off its existing code-sharing arrangements with airlines that belong to the other two airline alliances, Star Alliance and SkyTeam. Nonetheless, MAS will review its existing code-sharing arrangements with other airlines and make minor adjustments to optimise its network and operations post the admission to Oneworld.

While the impact of the Oneworld alliance membership should kick in during FY12/13, we are for now keeping our forecasts, pending clearer indications towards FY12/13.

Risks to our view include: (i) a lower than expected rise in MAS’ yields; (ii) higher jet fuel cost; and (iii) inability to contain outbreaks of pandemic diseases.

MAS has addressed its key concern, the inability to grow its yields, via a comprehensive fleet renewal programme. However, it will take a few years before all the aircraft are delivered and commissioned.

Meanwhile, MAS will just have to make do with its existing fleet, trying to make the best of it against a backdrop of a turnaround in the global aviation sector. On the other hand, the recent turnaround in the global aviation sector could also be cut short on sustained high crude oil prices.

Nonetheless, value has emerged after the recent sharp drop in share price. Upgrade to “market perform” from “underperform”. Indicative fair value is RM1.58 based on 1.6 times price-to-book, in line with the average of regional peers. — RHB Research, June 17
